Logan's Nine Month Stats

Weight: 22 lbs 15.5 oz (80% Regular Chart) (Greater than 90% on DS Chart) He was at 23 lbs 10 oz before RSV.

Length: 27 inches (10% Regular Chart) (50% DS Chart)

Head: 44 cm (15% Regular Chart)

His appointment went pretty well. We discussed a sleep study, which we decided we will do if it's still an issue when he can no longer sit in his car seat to sleep at night. Then, the doctor also asked a list of questions about Logan's gross and fine motor and intellectual development. Even though I am aware of where he is at for his age, I was very disappointed because the doctor went through the whole list and I had to answer no to every question. Like, "does Logan use his thumb and index finger to pick up small objects. (he is just beginning to reach out for stuff, but rarely actually grabs them with his whole hand!!) No, No, No... Let me say, I really like Logan's doctor and I'm not going to hold this against him, because I think he felt bad afterwards. I think he realized how rediculous it was to ask me all of that. I am sure he had to (maybe hoping I would say yes to something). Unfortunately, he made reality hit me...sometimes I get in a mode where I just feel like nothing could bother me, and then WHAMM! The sad feelings hit, but they will pass. His smiles tonight made me forget.

Pure Frustration

Logan can't get in for his appointment with the Pediatric ENT until February 2oth!!!! The first person I talked to told us the first appointment was March 24th, but I pushed to get him in ASAP. And the appointment is only to meet the doctor and have his initial evaluation. We have to go back for his "surgery" to test his hearing. (he needs to be sedated for the ABR, so I guess they call it surgery) I guess I will be waiting even longer to get the answers I need...

Ear Tube Surgery

Tubes are in!
Logan got his tubes this morning and is doing well. They put them in at 7:15am this morning. When the doctor came in, before surgery, he said Logan would be his biggest challenge of the day. (due to his tiny ears) When Logan came back to me he was extremely upset, in fact, he cried hard for an hour straight. The nurses said he was crying more than most kids because the doctor had to really dig around to get the tubes in. He only stopped when he was back in his car seat to go home. (he fell asleep) When we got home I gave him his max dose of Motrin and he slept for a few hours, then he woke up in a much better mood. He now seems to be back to normal, but I fear what he will be like when the pain meds wears off.
I had a bit of a scare when we arrived at the hospital because when the nurses heard Logan's breathing and his cough, they thought that the doctor would not do the surgery. It turns out they didn't understand that Logan is always a noisy breather and he is not sick, even though he sounds like he is. Every time I see a new doctor or nurse they think right away that Logan has RSV. They get all worked up about it and then it always turns out that he doesn't. He just is the way he is and we have gotten used to it.

New Year, New Adventures

"To new adventures".....life is still keeping it interesting, someone has to keep me on my toes.

I took Logan to an ENT on yesterday. I took him because his occupational therapist questioned his hearing and I was still very concerned about his cough (that has been around since September) and the fluid in his ears. I learned a lot from the doctor and now I wish I would have taken him sooner. Some concerns the doctor had was his breathing while he is sleeping (sleep apnea), fluid in his ears and his hearing. First, they did a hearing test and they were unable to get a result because of fluid in both of his ears. They did find that his ear drums are not responding the way they should to sound, but before they can find out if it is a hearing loss, they need to drain the fluid and put tubes in his ears. Two weeks after the surgery they well retest, then we will finally know if he is hearing well or not. We were also told that Logan needs to sleep with the head of his bed raised or in a car seat to help him with his breathing. I didn't realize that sleep apnea is pretty much a for sure thing for him when he is an adult and the doctor wants to eventually take out his tonsils and adenoids to help with that. I am concerned that the reason he sleeps so much is because he is not getting the proper amount of oxygen at night. I feel guilty for not thinking of that earlier...we will just have to wait and see if there is a difference in him after the tubes are in and his is sleeping upright.
He will have the tubes put in on Tuesday.

Pediatric Opthamologist

Today, I took Logan to a pediatric opthamologist (recommended at 6 months for babies with DS) to get his eyes checked for any serious problems. We found out that he is a little nearsighted and has astigmatism, but he has no major issues!! Also, his eyes cross intermittently, which I had noticed and was wondering about. The doctor will not do anything about the nearsightedness (getting glasses) or the crossing for now. We will have him checked again at 12 months to decide if he needs glasses or needs to have treatment for the crossing. So, it was a good appointment! I was very relieved to hear that he can see quite well. Now, I am worrying about his hearing. This past week, his occupational therapist asked if I have had his ears checked since birth. She is noticing that he does not react to the sound of a rattle or musical toys. I made an appointment with an ENT (ear, nose, throat specialist) for the 31st so that I can get his ears checked and get recommendations about the fluid and wax in his ears. I am concerned that this could effect his hearing if we don't keep an eye on it now. My biggest fear is an inability to hear effecting his speech.

Thyroid Test Results

The results of Logan's thyroid test came today. His number was 4.38 on a scale of .55-7.10. I have no idea what those numbers mean, I guess I should do a little research, but if he falls within this range his thyroid is normal, which it does.
I am very happy about the results, but I still don't have any answers to why Logan sleeps so much. His doctor told me to enjoy is while it lasts, so I guess that is what I am going to do. I just worry that he is not going to get stronger and learn new skills when he is not awake much.
Logan also had occupational therapy today and I had to explain to his therapist that he is just not interested in toys right now. That fact makes her visits a little frustrating because her job right now is to monitor his development as far as his reaching for and grasping of toys is going. When he is not doing that, it seems like we are doing nothing when she is here. He just looks at us like we are bothering him. He just wants to relax and look around the room.
Here is a picture of Logan from this past weekend. He is sitting with a couple of friends of mine, including another new addition to our group. Also, I made two more diaper cakes.
