AAI Update

After several days of asking questions and getting no where....Logan's pediatrician decided to call the Down Syndrome Clinic of Wisconsin. At first, Logan's doc was not going to recommend hippotherapy, but couldn't give me any idea of the severity of Logan's AAI. So, I think he felt like he needed to know what is typically done following a positive x-ray for AAI. I'm not sure what will be recommended now, but the DS clinic told Logan's doctor to set Logan up for a sedated MRI and to have a neurosurgeon at the Children's Hospital in Milwaukee read the results.

If you are curious, this is what Logan's results said. (I have to say that Logan cooperated beautifully though!!)

Positioning is less than optimal as a result of poor patient cooperation. There are some findings suggestive of craniocervical assimilation. There appears to be a hypoplastic or absent dens allowing abnormal mobility at the C1-C2 articulation. Depending upon clinical circumstances, CT or MRI could be considered for further evaluation.

I am hoping to know FOR SURE, if we need to limit Logan's activities and if we need to have future exams of his neck.

I cannot remember all of the particulars of Wyatt's xray but we met with Dr. Sean Lew in Milwaukee. Wyatt is restricted from doing sommersaults-it is hard to keep him from doing them but we encourage our older kids not to do them in front of him. As I recall Dr. Lew felt the problem would self correct by about age 8?? Sorry I am so sketchy on the details-OLD AGE aka menopause is setting in...Good luck! Jayne

Hi, I just wanted to share our experience~ We had Braedens xray done locally with our regular ped., a few days later he called and said there was a big problem and that we needed to pick a childrens hospital and find a neuro surgeon, we were completely freaked out! It took 3 weeks to get a sedated MRI at Rileys Childrens Hospital, and the results came back within an hour and everything was fine! No signs of AAI at all! The problem was with the person reading the xrays. So hang in there, try not to make yourself crazy until you have concrete results~ Take Care, Sarah

Hey Mel,
I've been down and out the last several days with illness! Sorry I'm just catching up. OK so I'm glad they're doing the MRI. Make SURE they are going to get "flexion/extension" views or the whole thing is kind of pointless. We've been through this with Kennedy and now are going into with Kellsey. If you have any questions, I would be happy to talk to you any time. Email me and I'll give you my number! CAmommy2KJ@aol.com .
